The Mr. Sandless process for Carpet Removal and Floor Refinishing
1. Preparation:
• Tools we use: A utility knife, pliers, a flat-bladed screwdriver or pry bar, gloves, knee pads, dust mask and potentially a hammer and a nail punch.
• Safety first: We wear gloves to protect our hands and a dust mask to avoid inhaling old dust and debris.
• Assess the situation: We determine how the carpet is attached to the floor (tacks, staples or glue).

2. Uplifting the Carpet:
• We use pliers to grip and lift a corner of the carpet.
• If the carpet is difficult to pull up, we use a utility knife to cut a small square (around 6 inches) in the corner to get a better grip, taking care not to cut into the floor board.
• We pull the carpet away from the wall, cutting it into strips as we go for easier handling. Again, taking care not to cut into the floor board.
• We roll the carpet strips and secure them with duct tape.

3. Removal of the underlay:
• If the underlay is stapled, it is relatively easy to uplift.
• We use pliers and a flat-bladed screwdriver to remove the staples that are holding the underlay to the floor. We ensure the staple is removed completely. However, older staples may break and any broken staples need to be either removed or nail punched down below the floor surface.
• We then roll up the underlay and secure with duct tape.

4. Disposal of Carpet and Underlay:
• Consider recycling carpet: Some carpet recycling programs may accept old carpet and use for weed mat.
• If recycling isn’t an option, we ensure proper disposal according to local council regulations.
